The 10 steps forward through grief, as I see them…

Joy

I am neither a mental health professional nor a grief counselor. I am a person who lost a loved one at the beginning of the pandemic and am actively working my way back to joy from substantial grief. These are the 10 steps back to joy, as I see them. (Click on each step to read more.) I have discovered most of these steps by accident, but I wish someone had shared them with me in a list like this to hasten my progress. I think these steps can happen in any order, not just in the order below. While I recognize that these seem to be my steps through grief, I have not completed many of them. My head knows what I need to do, but sometimes my heart takes over and does not listen to my head. Your journey might be like mine or it might be very different than mine, but maybe learning about my journey through grief can help shorten yours in some way or just ease a little of your pain. I am thankful for every tip and every push I have received along my journey, which is still in progress. I am working very hard on some of these steps and I am sure in time I’ll find my "new unchosen altered reality," as we call it in the Boca Raton grief support group I host, since the term "new normal" has been hijacked by the pandemic. I hope you find your new unchosen altered reality too! --- Jenniffer Lee
